Newsletter Sept/Oct 2009

Letter from the President

Saturday, October 3, we are having a Pig Roast and Jimmy Buffet Nite. The pig will be roasted on sight and later the Vintage Band and the Bums will play. Cost is $5.00 and a dish to pass. Put on your Hawaiian shirt and enjoy the good food and fun.

I’d like to thank the Building Committee – Aerie and Auxiliary members – who have take on the task of seeing to the necessary upgrades for our building while looking to the future. Also, thank you to the members who have supported them.

On September 26 the Eagle Riders from Jackson are having a Poker Run. They are raising money for St Luke of Jackson who fund health care for people who are laid off. We are going to offer them some food and run 50/50’s while they stop at our club. They estimate being in Charlotte about 2:00 pm. If anyone would like to volunteer to help, please let me know.
We had a great turn out for the NASCAR Derby. Thanks to Pat and her group that worked hard to put it together.

I want to remind everyone that this is our club. All the officers are nominated, elected and for the most part volunteer their time. We should all remember this and work together – not against each other – for the good of the club.

District meetings start up Sunday, September 20 and it’s about time Charlotte got the plaque back. I’d like to see more members make an effort to attend these meetings. Get a group together, meet at home or the club and head over for the meeting, a great meal and dollar drinks.

From the Auxiliary Secretary

I’d like to welcome two new members that were initiated into the Auxiliary this past summer. They are Cherie Brester and Lisa Sayre. Please give them a big welcome the next time you see them in the club. Also, a big “welcome back” to returning members, Susan Fulghum and Marci Montgomery.

Just a reminder that all 2008/2009 FOE Auxiliary dues expired (except lifetime members) on May 31, 2009. If you have not renewed for the 2009/2010 year by September 15, the re-enrollment fee goes up to $30.00. Don’t wait, get your dues paid now and save.

I am looking for a volunteer to be an assistant secretary. It would involve a couple hours every two weeks, mainly keeping membership records updated and other light office duties. If you are interested, please let me know.

Thank you for your support.
Nancy Conkey
Secretary, Eagles 3552 Auxiliary

From Auxiliary Bingo

Monday Bingo needs help! We are running low on callers, floor workers and kitchen help for the last two Monday’s of the month.

We are the major money maker for the Auxiliary and we have to rely on men to keep going. None of us want to work every Monday and if we had more help it would not be necessary.
Floor workers and callers are from 5:45 to approximately 9:30.

Kitchen help runs from anytime in the afternoon until about 8:30. This depends on what you fix and how much help you have to clean up. Kitchen closes after our bingo break which is usually around 7:30. Food is served from about 4:30 on. This is an Auxiliary kitchen – not really bingo. If you can help please call 543-5622.

Kay Birgy

Happenings

Our NASCAR Derby was a great success. We had more participants than we’ve seen in the past and added a youth race. Kids of all ages had a great time and the fans were out in numbers to cheer them on.

Our first Friday night Pool Tournament was in August. This was a great hit and brought in a crowd of players and spectators. They will run the second and fourth Friday – opposite of Karaoke. Entrance fee is $5.00 and prizes are awarded.

Karaoke was cancelled for August because so few people were in town. It will start back up in September. It’s every first and third Friday at 8:00 p.m.

The Just for Fun Sunday Pool Tournaments will start back up in September. This is a four club traveling league. Each week it moves between the Eagles, Moose, VFW and American Legion. Members from all clubs can shoot any week. The schedule will be posted when available and players sign up the day of the tournament.

The Club is sponsoring two Mens and one Mixed pool team. They are traveling teams that will play in Charlotte, Eaton Rapids, Dimondale and Bellevue. The men play on Monday and mixed on Wednesday. Wish them good luck.

Upcoming Events

September 26 – Jackson Eagle Riders Poker Run. Stop at Charlotte about 2:00. They are talking about up to 300 bikes.

September 20 – District Meeting Greenville

September 26 and 27 – Zone 2 Meeting in Mt. Pleasant.

October 3 – Pig Roast and Jimmy Buffet Party. The pig will be roasted on sight and the Vintage Band and the Bums will play. Cost is $5.00. Bring and a dish to pass, put on your Hawaiian shirt and enjoy the good food and fun.

October 17 – Handicap Hayride. This is always a great event for the guests and the volunteers.

October 24 – Pasty Day

October 25 – District Meeting Lansing

October 31 – Halloween Party. Details will be coming.

Capitol Report

There are many proposals in Lansing to raise fees and taxes. The Governor and some people have talked about: higher taxes on beer and cigarettes. New taxes on pop, movies, concerts, and all services. Higher fees on bars (including clubs).

Now bills to raise fees on charity gaming are being proposed. Games like Texas Hold'em would face higher fees hurting the charity that is hosting the event. I will oppose new and higher fees on the fund raisers for charity.

Newsletter - Jul/Aug 2009

Letter from President

Hi to all the members,

This is my first newsletter as the Aerie President. For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Marty Hewitt. I have been a member for many years and have served in the past as Vice President and Chaplin.

I’ve got my work cut out for me learning the ropes and appreciate the help I’ve received these first weeks. We have many members that want to make this a great club and good place to spend their time. We have committee’s to set up and I’m looking for volunteers. Please get a hold of me or leave a note at the club if you are interested in participating.

We have Burger Nite back on Thursdays and I look forward to seeing the members stop in for a bite to eat.

Our NASCAR Derby is July 18th. This has been a great event the past couple years and from the talk I’m hearing it’s going to be bigger and better than ever. For the first time we are adding a teen race (13 to 17 years). The kids can build their own or race an adult car. We’ll have food and drinks, tables set up outside, door prizes and 50/50’s all day. Come out and enjoy the fun.
This is a challenging time for the people in Michigan and our Club. I look forward to serving you and working with the officers and members to make it the best it can be.

Let’s see what a positive impact we can have working together and keeping a positive attitude!

Have a great summer!
Your President, Marty

Come out and join in on the fun "NASCAR Derby" July 18th. This is a must see event. Good Food, Drawings and many good races.

Letter from Trustees

Hello from the Trustees. We have a relatively new group this year and we are learning to work together team and at the same time learn the workings of the club.

There are a few projects we are investigating now to increase the curb appeal for our current building as we look to the future.

We have a suggestion in the Social Room and look forward to input from the membership.

May/June 2009 Newsletter

Letter from President

This will be my last “Letter from the President” for the newsletter. It’s been two years since I was first elected President, and I would like to thank everyone that has helped me along the way. We have accomplished many things during that time and raised money for my charity, the building fund and other causes around the area. We have also had a lot of fun. The support of the membership means a lot to me.

Don’t forget, we have a NASCAR Derby scheduled in July and it sounds like it’s going to be bigger and better than ever.

Marty Hewitt will take over the position of President in June and I hope that everyone shows him their support.

See ya around the Club.

Worthy President, Rod

Letter from Madam President

Hi to all the Auxiliary Ladies,

I would like to start out by Thanking our Men Aerie Members that put on a wonderful Mother/Daughter Banquet for all the ladies of the Eagles. A Special Thank You to Dave and Elaine Martin for the very delicious chicken dinner and Pat Goodrich for the scrumptious cake. It was a very nice evening.

Our 35th Anniversary Party was a good time. We had a very nice dinner catered by Ottawa Catering. The Good Time Show was a lot of fun. Thank You Pat Goodrich for all your time and effort put in to the show! We had a lot of good laughs.

Sisters in our Thoughts and Prayers: Sue Crews, Pat Crandell, Dawn Jones, Shirley Hines, Cathy Huver, Shirley Mills, Sue Pugh and any other sisters that I am not aware of.

The Auxiliary recently purchased a new "Garland Range" for our kitchen and it is beautiful. Thank You Donis Osborn for all the time and energy you spent on getting this stove for the club. One thing we really need to make sure of, is that everyone takes the time to clean this new stove when they use it. This IS a big investment and we do not want it to be ruined. A lot of hard work has gone in our club's kitchen. Please do your part to keep the kitchen looking the best that we can.

Lady Auxiliary meetings are every 2nd and 4th Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. I would like to invite all of our auxiliary members come and join us.

We could use some new volunteers (and all that have volunteered in the past) to help on different activities FOR YOUR CLUB, please contact me if you have time to volunteer. It is always nice to see new faces volunteering on activities.

Monday night Bingo is one of our biggest money makers and this is one area we could use your help. If YOU could volunteer once in a while and want to see the Charlotte Eagles be a great club, PLEASE VOLUNTEER! It would make a big difference. If you can help with Bingo, please contact Kay Birgy directly at 543-5622.

Have a safe and happy summer!

Your Madam President, Diana

From the Auxiliary Secretary

I’d like to welcome new members that have been initiated into the Auxiliary in March. They are: Patty Mears and Liz Betancourt. Please give them a big welcome next time you see them in the Club.

Word from the Grand Aerie has notified all Auxiliaries of changes in the Funeral Benefit Fund Effective June 1, 2009. The Funeral Benefit Fund continues as always for all auxiliary members qualified and initiated by May 31, 2009. After May 31, no new or re-enrolled member will be permitted to join as benefit members. The benefit of $200 will still be paid to the member’s beneficiary upon their passing if they were in good standing at the time of death. This is a good reason for all you benefit members to make sure your annual dues are paid on time and you don’t go delinquent.

Thank you for your support.

Nancy Conkey, Secretary, Charlotte Auxiliary

Thank you for your support.

Capitol Report

The State of Michigan is forced to make cuts. The State is spending $5 million per day that is NOT coming into the State in taxes. This is a result of people not spending, businesses leaving the State, and the problems GM and Chrysler are having. The State cannot print money or borrow like the Federal Government and MUST balance the budget. Many State employees will end up on lay off status. I'm pushing for an early out to allow people under the old retirement system to retire. All new State employees (including myself) have a 401K.

New taxes have been proposed on almost everything. A nickle more per beer, new gas tax, and higher State yearly bar fees for all bars (including the Eagles). I will continue to oppose higher taxes. The State must prioritize spending and makes cuts. Just like a family does with a paycheck.

Representative Rick Jones

Around the Club

On March 21 there was a Benefit Auction, Buffett and More for the Jerry Root family. Many donations from members and friends filled the back room for the auction and the bake sale tables were full. The buffet table was covered with good eats, Ben ran a pool tournament in the social room and 50/50 drawings ran through the day. At the end of the day, Jerry’s ceiling tile was placed and over $2,000 was raised.

March 28 was Pasty day. The cooks took preorders and filled orders until the supplies were gone. Keep a look out for the next one.

The Anniversary Dinner with Show and Band was February 18. We had a great turnout again this year. The caterer’s did a fine job with the dinner, the bad was good and the show that Pat put together with her willing actors, once again, out did all our expectations.

The BBQ Ribs and Chicken dinner on April 4 was a success. The social room was full, the food was great and the left over were few. Thanks to the cooks, Chuck and Joe and helpers Kim, Sally, Ted and Kari. We raised $360 for the Building fund. We finished up with and Wii bowling tournament. It was great fun with two TV’s for two lanes and eight teams.

Thursday, April 30th, was the last Weekly Hamburger Night until next fall. They went through a few different teams this year and kept it going for the whole season.

Upcoming Events

May 7 – Mother Daughter Banquet
May 17 – Eagle Memorial
May 20 – Aerie Election of Officers

Capitol Report from Rick Jones

A dentist in Farmington Hills drugged and raped a patient. He was convicted, did one year in jail, and now has been given his license back to practice as a dentist. I have introduced legislation to ensure that NO health professional will get their license back if they are convicted of criminal sexual conduct.

Many of our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines did not vote in the last election. While serving in Iraq or Afghanistan they received their ballots but could not return them in time for the election. I will be introducing legislation to ensure that they get to vote by allowing our service men and women to fax their ballot back to their clerk.

Representative Rick Jones

Around the Club

Our Snowflake Ball was January 24. We had a full house, good food and great entertainment with the Vintage Band and the Bums. The cooks out did themselves providing a great meal the band didn’t disappoint.

There was a Texas Hold’em Tournament at the Club on February 7th. Ticket sales started out slow, but they were nearly gone by start time. Between the games and the 50/50 drawings they raised $2,500 for the Building Fund.

The District 11 meeting was at Charlotte on February 22. We had a full house with the Aerie meeting in the banquet room and Auxiliary in the social room. The Auxiliary put out a great meal and everyone seemed to enjoy the hospitality displayed by our Club. We were given a couple different raffle tickets to sell to support our District and Zone that will be available for purchase from members or behind the bar.

Walk for Warmth Bingo, bake sale and chili cook off was a success. The winners of the cook off were: Paul Root, 1st place; Trevor Woods, 2nd place and Mike Vitale, 3rd place. We had a total of seven contestants. After the cook off the chili’s were for sale and there wasn’t much left by the end of the day. The bakers did a fantastic job and the tables were filled with lots of goodies up for sale. They didn’t last long on the sale table and many treats didn’t even make it out the door. There was a good turn out for bingo and everyone had a good time.

Newsletter Jan/Feb 2009

Welcome all to 2009. Hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year's holiday. Below you will find the current news letter. At the very bottom of this page you will find the links to the calendars. Just click to open and you can view or print.

As always, if you have any comments or would like to share news, please send a comment through this site or an e-mail to FOEnews@yahoo.com

In Memory of Jerry Root

In December this Club lost a good brother and good friend who will be deeply missed by many. Speaking at his funeral, Jerry’s cousin, Donis Osborn expressed her feelings and those of many of the people there that day when she offered up some memories and some words of wisdom. One part stood out as especially fitting not just for this sad time, but for all of life. Donie gave me a copy to share with the members through the newsletter.

Jerry’s death is sad and tragic!! If anything can be learned from it . . . to me it would be the following three things:

1. Tolerance of others. I ask you to practice tolerance everyday.
2. Editing. Edit what you say before it is said – because once something is said you cannot take it back. So ALWAYS EDIT your comments.
3. Compassion. Compassion for Jerry and how much Jerry must have been hurting to have taken his life.
And now, compassion for all of us to help get through this. Give compassion sincerely and unconditionally.
Tolerance – Editing – Compassion

Club News

The Christmas dinner was a success as always. We had a big crowd and Santa was there to the delight of all the children. The Christmas breakfast was also a hit and once again, Santa and the Mrs. were on hand to greet the kids. A big thanks to all who helped with both events.

Virginia Woodworth outdid herself once again on Christmas Eve by cooking up a big bunch of her famous eggrolls and rice dishes. The social room was full when she arrived and I didn’t see anyone miss a trip to the food table.

Euchre is again in full swing with tournaments every other Sunday at 4 pm. See the calendar for the schedule.

Snowflake Ball is coming up January 24th. Plan to come in for a good dinner and an evening of dancing.

Capitol Report

This year the Senate passed a bill that would have ended smoking everywhere including the Eagle's Clubs. However the House passed a different version. Because they were different then no bill could be sent to the Governor. I will continue to vote for the club membership to decide on smoking rules and NOT the State Government.

Everyone is very concerned about the survival of General Motors. I will continue to do everything I can from my position to support GM. We need a strong GM for Michigan.

I served on the Leadership Advisory Committee supporting MSU in their effort to bring the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams to MSU. We won the contract from the Federal Govt. It should bring in a Billion dollars of investment and 500 new jobs to Mid-Michigan. Many of these jobs will be construction jobs. The new facility will do research and may bring new medical advances!
